Security Alert: Eurovision Security Awareness Reminder–U.S. Embassy, Vienna (May 8, 2026)

Location: Multiple Locations in Vienna

Event: The City of Vienna is hosting the 2026 Eurovision contest, with events taking place throughout the city in advance of and during the official performances on May 12, 14, and 16.  Eurovision will bring an influx of visitors from participating countries, as well as from the United States, exceeding normal tourist levels.  Visitors may expect heightened security measures, road closures, and unusually high levels of congestion – particularly in proximity to Eurovision venues in the First District.  In addition, Vienna police report several planned demonstrations around Vienna during this time, including on May 14, 15 and 16.

Embassy Vienna would like to remind U.S. citizens in Austria to continue to remain vigilant and follow appropriate personal security practices.

Actions to take:
•  Be aware of your surroundings and potential exit routes from crowded areas. If you see something that seems odd or out of place, immediately notify the nearest law enforcement officer and move away from the area.
•  Always carry your cellphone, programmed with local emergency numbers: Austrian Police (133), Ambulance (144), Fire (122), Europe-wide emergency (112).
•  Exercise caution (in large crowds and congested areas).
•  Stay alert in locations frequented by tourists.
•  Use caution when walking or driving at night.
•  Monitor local media for updates.
•  Follow instructions of local authorities.
•  Review your personal security plans.
•  Have a plan for communicating with friends or family members in the event of an emergency.
